This document contains all of my compiled resources and lesson plans that I use in my high school British Literature class for my short unit on George MacDonald's The Princess and the Goblin. In this unit, we spend a lot of time encountering the power and role of fairy tales and fantasy, as well as the depth of symbolism and thematic richness in this seemingly simple book. However, my materials can be easily adapted and built upon, whether you're presenting it to a younger or older audience.
This document includes resources such as a list of pre-reading activities; lists of symbols, themes, and biblical allusions with coinciding chapter numbers; many lesson ideas for single classes or major projects that I have used; and ideas for complimentary books and films to show. Its appendices also include chapter reading comprehension questions (and answers) to use for quizzes or discussion, a printable symbols chart, a final reading comprehension quiz, and two printable project handouts.
Also, be sure to check out my full unit plan for The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis,
which I use as a complimentary text in the same quarter!
