While characterization seems like an easy topic that is often handled in earlier grades, the concept can often be quite complex. In fact, complicating the notion of character and how we deal with characters in literature can be a good thing. This presentation touches on some critical distinctions about the notion of characters and touches on Theory of Mind and even a bit of cognitive narrative theory. The main goal, however, is the present the whole concept of "character" as an interesting literary problem. I have used this presentation for grade 10 but it is particularly appropriate for IB Literature, IB Language and Literature and AP Literature.
