Students will complete this activity as they read The Quilt Walk by Sandra Dallas. As students read, they will be searching for evidence of multiple themes within the novel.
**A story’s LITERARY THEME is any central topic or message in a novel. It is often a message the author is trying to tell you about life. It is rarely stated explicitly (clearly) in the text. Instead, readers are expected to “read between the lines” to determine the theme.**
For this project, students will be theme detectives! They will be searching for three different themes as they read. When students find text evidence that supports the theme they’re looking for, they will record it in the chart attached.
Four versions of this project are included:
Version 1 – All three themes are pre-chosen.
Version 2 – Two themes are pre-chosen, and the third may be chosen by you, the teacher.
Version 3 – Two themes are chosen, and the third may be chosen by students.
Version 4 – Blank version. You or students may choose all themes.
