The RACER Strategy teaches students how to respond to open-ended questions. This strategy reminds students to answer questions completely and cite evidence and examples from the text.
I’ve seen similar strategies (RACE), but I found the RACER strategy and explanations the most helpful for students:
R – Restate the question to create a topic sentence
A – Answer the question completely
C – Cite evidence from the text to support your answer
E – elaborate/explain the evidence
R – restate the answer to create a closing sentence OR relate the answer to something in your own life
I have created this packet to help students practice using the RACER strategy. In this packet, you will find 3 articles (one nonfiction, two fiction), 2 graphic organizers, guided practice (breaks down each question into smaller sections for students) RACER questions, and an answer key for each question to show you what a RACER response looks like!
Check out my first RACER Bundle and my RACER bookmarks to help students become pros at responding to open-ended questions!
