This Reader's Theater was written for a small group of 3 students. It is about who the real Uncle Sam was and how he came to be used to represent America. The hosts of the Minutes in History Show are going to interview Sam Wilson. The man is in Historical Mode and uses historical facts to answer questions. This way, everyone can hear the true story of who Uncle Sam was. It turns out that the real Uncle Sam was a meat packer from Troy, New York. Everyone discusses how his name came to be used to represent America. This also makes a great script for the 4th of July, President's Day, Memorial Day, and any other patriotic federal holiday as well as when studying US history. It is important to teach the vocabulary of this script as students practice.
I write small group reader's theaters so they will work better in centers and to avoid having long wait times between student's lines. Wait time is not reading time and often turns into off task behavior time. Small group reader's theater helps to get students reading more and encourages even reluctant readers to practice fluency.
My name is Melanie Whitesides but my store name is Wonbyone and I hope that your students enjoy this script as much as mine did. Most of my scripts are black and white so that they can be photo copied easier and take less ink. Please let me know what you think.
