Teaching the AP Language and Composition course to Advanced Placement students, or simply covering the basics of the Research Essay with your High School English Language Arts students? Promote digital literacy and avoid plagiarism with this Synthesis Research Essay Introductory Lesson.

FULL INTERACTIVE LESSON FOR POWERPOINT®
GUIDED GRAPHIC ORGANIZER NOTE INCLUDED
VERB BANK WITH 70+ VERB SUGGESTIONS PROVIDED

How to use this resource:

I begin this lesson with the interactive slideshow for PowerPoint® and Google Slides. This lesson highlights the 5 Characteristics of a proper synthesis essay while highlighting how it is different than other forms of writing. Students will explore formal writing and why they must avoid personal pronouns; they'll also be challenged to move past simple summaries of their research sources and be provided with digital literacy indicators to differentiate between credible and illegitimate sources. In addition to this, information on proper citations and avoiding plagiarism is highlighted. Examples for each of these characteristics are provided, and students are prompted to identify them as appropriate for expository writing or not.

Also provided with this resource is a guided note; students can fill out the synthesis research essay graphic organizer in this note as you move through the lesson. A handout with the information from this lesson has also been provided to accomodate students with exceptionalities, Special Education students or English Language Learners. You can also use this handout if you wish to not use the presentation for PowerPoint® or Google Slides.

Finally, a Verb Bank with over 70+ suggestions for verbs has been provided in order to encourage your students to utilize language effectively while engaging with their sources.
