What is a Comprehension Club?
A Comprehension Club is much like a Book Club, except team members are working on comprehension skills in addition to fluency skills within a text. The texts within the club kit are paired so that students make find connections to share and discuss with their club members.
What is in the kit?
This Comprehension Club Kit includes no prep interactive reading journal activities for 2 similar texts—The Raft by Jim LaMarche and Weslandia by Paul Fleischman. Common Core aligned scoring rubrics, simple data tracking/conference forms, and comprehension quizzes for both texts are also included.
How do I set up the kits for students?
These no prep activities are simple to set up and easy for students to understand. Simply copy the direction cards and a set of activities for each student. Place the activities in a club folder with the books (libraries will have these titles if you do not have them in your room). I place the folders and the books in a bag (the Dollar Tree has the best bags for this) and have groups prepared with their Interactive Reading Journals. The activities can be implemented in whole group, with clubs, or in guided reading groups. When I meet with groups they will bring their reading journals (or I go to them) to review their activities and discussions, and assess their fluency and comprehension. You can rotate club activities every 2-3 weeks.
Why should I implement the Comprehension Club?
Comprehension Club kits offer the best of book clubs, guided reading discussion, and meaningful mini-lessons all in one. Students are engaged in comprehension activities centered on specific tasks, while building their Interactive Reading Journal to reference again and again to build schema. Students are connecting reading and writing, with listening and speaking, in engaging group activities. Directions are simple enough for students to follow in small groups, which maximizes and focuses the time you have to spend discussing and assessing their reading comprehension.
