Comprehension and Analysis of "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe

This resource is a complete lesson plan and student materials for comprehending Edgar Allan Poe’s classic poem “The Raven.” In this lesson, students read “The Raven” together one time and then complete a second read of key sections of the poem in order to gain an understanding of what happens in the poem. This lesson on “The Raven” contains literal and inferential questions, as well as a multiple choice exit ticket. This lesson can be used with 7th-9th graders and aligns to Common Core Standards RL 7.1, RL 8.1 and RL 9-10.1, as well as RL 7.4, RL 8.4 and RL 9-10.4. This resource DOES NOT contain the text of “The Raven.”

Lesson Outline:
1. Do Now: Students reflect on fear and response to fear. Try to push them to think about why people often get angry when they are afraid.
2. Shared Reading: “The Raven”: Either find an audio recording of “The Raven” to have students listen to, or have them read the poem aloud as a class.
3. Second Read: In partners, the students should work through the comprehension questions one section at a time. After each section, stop to go over the answers with the class. Use the answer key provided. Push students to pay careful attention to the language in the poem, specifically Poe’s word choice. Doing this should help them pick up on the mood and tone of the poem.
4. Exit Ticket: 5 multiple choice questions on “The Raven.” An answer key is provided.
