This is a fun small group activity that can be used in grades 8 through 12. This is an assignment that requires deep thinking and that the students actually enjoy. I usually introduce this activity in October to set the Halloween theme. Divide the class up into small groups of a minimum of 2 students but no more than 4 students. Give each group one of more verses of Edgar Alan Poe’s poem The Raven. Have the students totally and thoroughly translate the verse(s) into today’s modern language. Any vocabulary must be simplified and their text must be clearly understandable and must remain within Poe’s original context and meaning. This is an example from the first verse that you can use to get the kids started and to explain the assignment.
