This close reading activity takes your students through three extended steps to read and analyze Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven." First, students read the poem aloud or listen to the poem (I like to use an audio recording and dim the lights). Second, students work alone or in groups to break down each stanza by annotating the poem. Finally, students answer high-level analysis questions. This activity can be used for individuals, partners, or groups; it can also be done in class, as homework, or an a combination.
