This Reading Olympics activity is a great way to have fun and celebrate the love of reading with your students, while introducing and reviewing several different reading concepts. It is perfect for March is Reading Month or anytime you want to plan something special to get kids excited about reading!
Included in this product you will find:
*A Reading Olympics brochure for students to record their thinking during each event. This brochure can be printed on 8-1/2x11 or 11x17 size paper, as well as in color or black and white. Print the pages back to back, and then fold into a brochure and you're ready to go!
-Reading Olympic events include:
**Designing a bookmark for your favorite book
**Reading poetry and drawing a mental image
**Going on a nonfiction text feature scavenger hunt
**Brainstorming an ABC’s of books list
**Researching a popular children’s author. I have created a Padlet page to help students research an author using classroom technology. The link to this page is included in this product. If technology is not available, there are suggestions for other ways to complete that event.
*Teaching tips for each Reading Olympics event
*Materials to hold an awards ceremony to celebrate a job well done. This includes:
-A ready-to-print and editable Reading Olympic Certificate in color and black and white.
-A Reading Olympics bookmark
-A Reading Olympics medallion and directions to make a Reading Olympics medal for each of your students
This activity can be done in a half day in your classroom, or you can spread out each event over several days. Another fun idea is to have your whole grade level participate, with each classroom "hosting" a different Reading Olympics event. Students then switch classes to go from event to event.
