As a first grade teacher, I designed the Reading Strategy Hand to help my students solve unknown words. Whenever they do not know a word they start with the thumb strategy and work through the strategies on each finger in order. After a while, students automatically know which strategy is on which finger and can use the strategies independently (without the paper or while reading by themselves).
Strategy 1 – Look at the first letter in the word.
Strategy 2 – Look at the picture.
Strategy 3 – Think. What would make sense?
Strategy 4 – Look for a part you know.
Strategy 5 – Read Blank Read.
