This powerpoint was designed to introduce students to The Real Numbers System and each of its subsets (natural, whole, integer, rational, irrational, and real). Each subset is defined via Venn Diagram followed by examples of each. When using this powerpoint I generally print out a blank copy of the Venn Diagram so that students can copy the definitions alongside a few examples (provided in the powerpoint) for each subset as we move through each tier. A brief discussion is had after the introduction of each tier using the example(s) so that students fully digest the definition of each.
Following the Venn Diagram I've included 7 slides that will enlist students to identify where each example belongs in the real numbers system; and a final question for students to think of real-world examples where we use the real numbers system. These examples may also be added to the students Venn Diagram for points of reference as well.
This powerpoint is very interactive and will invoke productive classroom discourse circulated around the topic of real numbers and their subsets. I've used this powerpoint for the past several years and every year my students are always engaged and eager to participate.
