Product Description
This assignment for the short story "The Red-Headed League" includes a prompt, a specific rubric, and guiding outline, and a sheet with example topic & transition sentences.

This assignment, appropriate for late junior-high students (I use this with 9th graders), asks students to complete an outline consisting of a background sentence, thesis statement, 2 topic sentences, 2 closing sentences, and 4 pieces of quoted evidence with brief explanation.

The final product is an outline, but teachers could easily add another step to this assignment by asking students to develop this outline into a complete essay.
