This Candian novel will knock your socks off and those of your students! My reluctant readers ate this one up. I have divided up the novel into four equal parts and have provided a quick "who, what, when, where" matching quiz assessment for readers. I like to do this when students are completing a self-directed novel study for me to ensure they are reading the piece and to see their basic understanding. This novel I have used for both my grade eight class and grade seven class, but can easily see it fit in with some grade nine readers as well. I believe some of the lower readers may miss the subtle connections within the piece. Great read for your reluctant boy readers! Others I have in my reading selection for this unit is Bystander by James Preller, One for the Murphys by Lynda Mullaly Hunt, Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, Mockingbird Kathryn Erskine (I have listed), Corner of the Universe by Ann Martin and Lost in the Sun by Lisa Graff (I also have listed).
