Students will first be introduced to the topic of the Renaissance by watching the Crash Course World History video: The Renaissance: Was it a Thing? The video will go over the Italian city states, the importance of trade with the Ottoman Empire, the art of the Renaissance, Humanism and the great thinkers of the time, and the rebirth of the ideals of ancient Greece and Rome. The video also explains how the Renaissance was not one single event, instead it was hundreds of separate events all occurring over hundreds of years. The video also explains that a majority of Europeans would not have experienced the cultural enlightenment of the time, the Renaissance was contained to mostly the wealthy and powerful. Following the video, students will proceed to the History.com website where they will watch a short video clip and read an accompanying article about the Renaissance. The article goes over the important scientific discoveries of the time, the evolution of art during the Renaissance, and why the concept of Humanism was such a central element of the Renaissance.
