In this activity the student will look at the cost of healthcare from 1998 to 2005 and be asked to determine if there is a relationship between each progressing year and the cost (in billions of dollars) for healthcare. The student will also be asked to project into the future and calculate the cost for healthcare based on a regression formula generated by the data provided and using a spreadsheet. I would suggest that the teacher download the FREE “How to incorporate a spreadsheet software” manual and discuss its contents with the class prior to performing this activity.
The student has the opportunity to determine whether the “Affordable Health Care Law” will actually produce the reduction in health care.
As an optional exercise or project, the student could be asked to investigate, through the internet, how accurate their calculations were.
There are 6 pages with 4 questions to be answered in this activity. An answer guide is provided.
