The Road to Bethlehem
Costume Ideas: Mary - A simple shift with a shawl over her head and shoulders. Joseph - A plain, burlap or unbleached cotton tunic over trousers. A blanket over his shoulders.
Mary and Joseph enter and walk slowly around and off the stage as the song is sung.
Costume patterns for the Nativity are now available in pattern books. All it took was a note in our school newsletter, and I had parent volunteers to make the costumes. If you stage the entire Nativity scene with angels, shepherds and Wise Men you may want to look at the Simplicity pattern book. For our shepherds we made crooks out of hockey sticks covered with brown wrapping paper. Our angels had halos made of tinsel stapled in a circle in a variety of sizes. We borrowed white choir robes from a neighboring school rather than trying to make 40 of our own. One of our parents secured the loan of Wise Men robes from her church. Our shepherds wore bathrobes with towels tied on their heads with binder twine.
The Road to Bethlehem has an optional second part. As a unison song, it will
work well with Grade 2-6. As a two part, it could be used in middle school.
The Single Song Kit includes:
a suggested script
audio and accompaniment tracks
audio and accompaniment movies
The Road to Bethlehem is part of The Christmas Concert Idea Book, which is a collection of mini-plays, skits and songs, each of which is suitable for a K-6 class (or choir) to perform at a Christmas concert. It also includes a school-wide production that incorporates each song from the collection and includes interactions with students from Kindergarten to Grade 6. The production is set up in such away that it helps the school to maintain a common theme throughout, while also allowing each class to practice and perform their selection on their own.
