"The Rose that Grew From Concrete" Black History Month; Tupac Shakur
Product Description
This file is a two page PDF file, ready to print and use with your students when studying "The Rose that Grew From Concrete". You will need to provide your own copy of the poem, as it is still under copyright. There is a hyperlink for the poem's lyrics included.

The handout is a brief scenario of the poem, paraphrased from Tupac's own words. It then asks three discussion questions based on the poem, then four more scenario type questions to provoke the discussion on resiliency. There is a "ticket out the door" to assess their understanding of resiliency and try and create their own metaphor, like a rose that grew from concrete.

I used this handout with my middle school students and they enjoyed the lesson. There are a few youtube videos that could be used to enhance the lesson (a Powerade commercial) but it is difficult to find one with Tupac that is appropriate for school. Either way, it is a modern poem that bring rap music to life through poetry.
