Can I even tell you how much I love "The Runaway Pumpkin", by Kevin Lewis? It's one of my ALL TIME favorites... I've read it to my students and my own kiddos for years now! All that thumpin' and bumpin' is just so much fun! For a better look at what's included, just click on PREVIEW!
Since I read the story to my class each year, I decided that it would be EXTRA fun to have my students write their own versions of the story. Oh boy, do they ever come up with some hilarious places for their pumpkins to roll! And, they get to practice using their transition words... first, next, then, last!
There are 3 graphic organizers to help your students plan out the sequences of their story (one for drawing pictures, one with pictures and words, and another with only text which can be used for the first draft).
Other Ways To Say "Went" Brainstorming Page:
As a class, brainstorm words that students can use to describe how their pumpkin moves from one place to another. Does it zoom, crash, bounce or zip? As you brainstorm, write the words on the board or Smart Board and have your students write the words on their paper.
Book Cover and Writing Pages:
There are several pages included to use for your student's final drafts. Choose the ones you like and copy them together with the book cover.
When ready to illustrate, I always have my students draw their pictures first. Then, they add the pumpkin rolling through the scene by cutting out the provided pumpkins and gluing them onto the page. So cute!!!
