Jack is back, and this time he's traveling the globe! In this Backpack Jack STEM adventure, students need to work with their teams to construct the longest possible free-standing wall. If they are successful, they can attempt a second challenge to build the tallest possible free-standing wall.
Each lesson in the Backpack Jack series begins by introducing (or becoming reacquainted with) Jack, a fun-loving outdoor adventurer. Students will read Jack's challenge, and work collaboratively with their classmates to come up with a solution. To add to the challenge, the only materials students may use are the odds and ends in Jack's backpack! (All materials are readily available and free or very inexpensive.)
This lesson contains:
--student materials list
--teacher prep and directions
--8-page student booklet, guiding students through the engineering process (4 full-sized pages, printed back-to-back, folded in half)
-- 2-page "short form" if time is limited
--1 follow-up/reflection page
-- 1 page of "fun facts" about the landmark
