Analyze the Symbols in James Hurst's Short Story "The Scarlet Ibis"

This resource is a complete lesson plan with all student materials to help students analyze symbolism throughout James Hurst’s short story “The Scarlet Ibis.” In this lesson, students work through analyzing and annotation three excerpts of “The Scarlet Ibis,” with a focus on identifying, analyzing and connecting symbols in the text. Each excerpt contains detailed annotation instructions to guide analysis of the text, and questions that require students to cite textual evidence to support their responses. At the end of the lesson, students respond to a writing prompt that asks them to analyze the meaning of one of the symbols in the text. This resource works best for students who have already read “The Sniper” once. I used this in my 8th grade classroom, but it would be suitable for students in grades 8-10.

This resource for “The Scarlet Ibis” directly addresses the following skills: close reading, citing textual evidence to support answers, analyzing symbolism, and expository writing. It contains all necessary student materials, a teacher answer key and a rubric for grading the writing responses.

Note that this resource does not include the full text of the story, due to copyright restrictions, but does include the excerpts students need for analysis.
