This activity is a PowerPoint Presentation where student analyze the effect of symbolism in the short story, "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst. Students focus on the following Places / Events / Objects in the story and what each one represents and/or symbolizes.
Old Woman Swamp -Happiness, brotherly love, family
Doodle’s coffin - Death, loss
The wagon - Freedom, to be able to move around outside house
The rowboat - Strength / Exercise Program
The scarlet ibis - Dies under bleeding tree/symbolizes Doodle & death
The bleeding tree - Death
Peter the peacock - Imagination / Dreams
The barn loft - Fear / Abandonment
The color red - Death / Blood
Weather - Tears / Sadness
(Such as Rain, Storms, Lightning, Extensive Heat)
The project includes slides for each of these items/elements so that students can look at the symbolism contained in the story.
