This is a different kind of study guide/activity for Chapters 9 & 10 of Hawthorne's novel. These chapters focus on two of the main characters, Arthur Dimmesdale and Roger Chillingworth, and Hawthorne points out many differences between these two. This lesson plan begins with an introduction about foil characters, and then the students must decide if the 50 character traits and descriptions listed relate to either Dimmesdale or Chillingworth. This lesson plan can be used as a reading check, open book assignment, or homework. An answer KEY is provided. It is a good first step for a comparison/contrast essay.
