Product Description
This lesson can be used with chapters 7 or 8 of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter and gives detailed steps on investigating the complexity and contrasting natures of the character Pearl. (While this lesson works well with these chapters, it could also be used at another point in the novel to research Pearl.) The activity of the lesson uses two well-known poems to aid students in investigating the text of The Scarlet Letter and the character of Pearl more closely. It asks that students read both the poems and the novel closely and use quotes as evidence to support their ideas. This lesson is slated to take place during a 45 minute class period, however, it could be expanded to take 5-15 minutes longer if time is available. (Note: as some of the vocabulary of the book and the poems may be unfamiliar to students, it is a good idea to provide them with dictionaries or glossaries during this activity.)
