After reading The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, use this project sheet as a final assessment. The included assessments allow students to showcase their understanding and comprehension of the story as an alternative to a traditional test. The project is in two parts for a combined total of 75 points.
Part one provides three separate essay prompts for which students need to explore, cite, and evaluate the events of the story. After selecting a prompt, they are asked to cite three specific events from the story that tie into the selected prompt. Each prompt is broad and open-ended, allowing for flexibility in student responses and interpretation.
Part two provides five separate creation projects that involve expanding on some aspect of the story. (characters, plot events, relationships, etc.) Students then complete this part of their project in conjunction with the essay.
