This is a seventeen-question multiple-choice quiz to check if students read the introductory chapter to the novel. Since The Custom-House is quite long, I tried to pick out significant items spaced far apart in the text. I also tried to dwell on items that convey Hawthorne's authorial style. The idea is to use the quiz as a lead into discussion, especially how Surveyor Pue's discovery seamlessly melds into the story. This is a good chapter to review Hawthorne the man and Hawthorne the writer. The difficulty level is definitely above basic, but any student who can read and understand should be able to figure the questions out.
