This packet was designed to support my struggling 4th and 5th grade ESL students as they read The Schoolyard Mystery by Elizabeth Levy. While the book is considerably below grade level, I've found that the readability and interest levels are appropriate for these students. This packet might also be appropriate for second and third grade students reading on or about grade level.
After a guided reading session for each chapter, students work independently, or in pairs, to complete the chapter activity pages. Before reading the next chapter, students share their comprehension responses with the group. This discussion creates authentic dialogue opportunities that are so important for our ESL students.
I have included a brief worksheet on the use of quotations in dialogue and a follow-up reading activity designed to encourage additional opportunities for dialogue between my ESL students. To extend the follow-up activity, I have students write a narrative essay about being invisible for a day.
