This free and engaging activity presented by the Science Store is designed to introduce elementary students to scientific inquiry by using the scientific method. Scientific inquiry is a process that we use every week in some manner to help us understand the world around us. This activity can be used as a part of your scientific method curriculum to familiarize your students with the steps of the scientific method and scientific inquiry in general. It can be used to satisfy science standards and common core reading and writing standards. It is designed to allow elementary teachers to teach science and reading skills simultaneously, thus saving time in what is already a busy daily schedule. Several strategies offering practice on writing skills, critical thinking skills, and application skills are included in this activity. It can be utilized and adapted as needed for use in an ESE curriculum. The duration of this activity is 20 minutes, however, teachers can extend it as needed. It is designed for use in 3rd through 5th grade classrooms, however, it can be adapted for 6th grade life science students and for 1st and 2nd grade students.
