The purpose of this activity is to allow students to think critically to answer a seemingly simple question. In this case, it’s to test a classic Shakespearean quote that claims that a rose would still smell beautiful if it was called something else. The students will need to use the scientific method to determine a way to answer that question. They will also need to design a test to empirically show that changing the name of something will not affect the smell.
This experiment lends itself to many different areas of study including physical education, science, literature, math, and quote interpretation. Feel free to use this in whatever subject area you choose!
