The face of science teaching is changing. Common Core Science Standards, as well as the Next Generation Science Standards, are asking teachers to emphasis scientific concepts, rather than the memorization of large amounts of factual data. Instrumental to these new standards is teaching the student how to design and implement an experiment of their own. The first step in teaching the student-designed experiment is to provide the student with a complete and thorough understanding of the scientific method.
This 58 slide Scientific Method PowerPoint is designed to provide students with a practical experience with the scientific method. Each step is explained and followed by questions that practice that step. Several slides are designed to be printed out as practice sheets. All questions can be used in either individual, small, or large group format. There are built in opportunities for students to think-pair-share, review, and clarify before moving on to the next step. By the end of this presentation students should be able to correctly use the scientific method to design and carry out basic science experiments independently.
