The purpose of this activity is to allow students to think critically to answer a seemingly simple question. In this case, it’s an old adage that states that multiple people on the same job will get it done faster than only one. The tricky part about this question is that there are also adages stating the opposite, such as “too many cooks in the kitchen spoil the broth.” So, which is correct? The students will need to use the scientific method to determine a way to answer that question. They will also need to design a test to empirically show that many hands make light work.
This is a great experiment to link language arts to the sciences. In many states, the students will have to reflect upon quotes and describe their meanings. In this case, it's exploring the meaning of an idiom, but also testing it scientifically to seek its validity.
