The purpose of this activity is to allow students to think critically to answer a seemingly simple question. In this case, do pirate eye patches actually have a purpose? The myth claims that pirates would wear eye patches to have one eye constantly night-vision ready in the event of a night battle, or going inside the ship during the day. The students will need to use the scientific method to determine a way to answer that question. They will also need to design a test to empirically show that eye patches can help see better in the dark.
This experiment is based on the Mythbusters Pirate Special, so it's recognizable to students and allows the students to test a myth about a popular historical group and the science of the human eye. Plus, it's an excuse for students to wear pirate eye patches and say "ARRRRR" during class. It's a win-win for everyone!
