Primary source analysis is the key to historical study. It’s how historians piece together narratives about the past, and it’s imperative to let students in a history course practice.
After studying Japan during the Age of Exploration, give this handout to students. They read this selection: Tokugawa Iemitsu, "CLOSED COUNTRY EDICT OF 1635" AND "EXCLUSION OF THE PORTUGUESE, 1639.” Then they will complete the foldable graphic organizer, which includes APPARTS analysis and a crossword puzzle.
