This unit will support your second four weeks of school with an emphasis on non-fiction related to the Autumn season. Included currently is Fireboat: The Adventures of John J. Harvey (which is a children's book I use to help address 9/11 in my classroom), Reasons for the Seasons by Gail Gibbons (I focus in on the introduction, conclusion, and the section on Autumn), and Apples by Gail Gibbons.
Soon to be added will be Johnny Appleseed, Pumpkins, and Bats. If you buy this bundle now, you will receive the updated version for the current purchase price. Buy it now before the price increases to $25!
Just like with The First Four Weeks of School unit, this unit has us completing a close read of the text 3 days a week, with a focus on a different non-fiction standard each day. Those standards are then repeated with each text to help students gain a deep understanding of the standard. This unit is also supported by comprehension strategy study. Students will incorporate their knowledge of schema from the fiction unit into their current schema (background knowledge) of the non-fiction topics presented here. They will also determine what is important in each text (main idea) and tell how they know it was important (details). They will also create a Non-fiction Text Features Notebook to help them identify the parts of a non-fiction text that help a reader breakdown the information presented.
