Includes Reading Log description in addition to fourteen reading logs for all fourteen chapters of The Secret Life of Bees.
Whether to be used as an in-class critical reading tool or for homework assignments, these interactive reading logs add fun to student's reading accountability while assessing their understanding of plot, developing vocabulary acquisition and ultimately giving kids extended connection questions that force students to think critically about the book and how it relates to their lives in the twenty-first century.
This is a great ongoing resource for any Secret Life of Bees unit at any level, though I don't recommend using it as the only assessment/instructional tool in your practice.
I used these as a homework assignment with seniors, as we spent a majority of the unit writing blog post reactions to events in the book in addition to some similar issues of racial discourse we noticed in current events. The reading logs were effective for the students to reflect back on the events of the book, and incorporate specific quotations within their writing, in addition to offering a framework for invigorating class discussion, vocabulary quizzes and keeping the kids accountable for their reading outside of class.
