Literary analysis is becoming increasingly important as students are often required to cite textual evidence and analyze aspects of literature.
This graphic organizer includes a student handout that describes the basic components of literary analysis. Because the graphic organizer has students considering components of literary analysis, it can be a good starting point to build these analytical skills. Two versions of an excerpt are also included and can be used as a teacher think-aloud or as part of whole-group instruction.
In addition to the student handout that includes an outline and an example, there are three versions of a worksheet that relates to the short story “The Secret" by Arthur C. Clarke. The first two versions include some pre-selected text evidence examples while the third version is blank and requires students to locate their own examples of text evidence from “The Secret.” While this activity is good for students as they learn the aspects of literary analysis, it also makes great practice and reinforcement.
Aspects of the activity could be further developed into a detailed paragraph or literary analysis essay for “The Secret."
An optional worksheet is included that can be used as a stand-alone assessment or an addition to an assessment. It includes literary analysis and two versions of a text-dependent analysis prompt. Answer key is included for this worksheet.
