In this game-based history simulation, students will role-play as heads of families in the Reconstruction Era South. Students will experience what life was like as a sharecropper or tenant farmer after the Civil War. By playing through four years of simulation in a 50-minute class period and keeping track of their family's budget, students will be able to answer the essential questions: "What was life like for freedmen in the Reconstruction Era?" and "How did sharecropping contribute to the role of freedmen?" Random events will make it so no two students have the same events occur, nor the same balances at the end of the game.
This PowerPoint features animated slides to guide students step-by-step through the game. The necessary score sheet is a freebie available here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Sharecropping-Game-Scoresheet-3460134.
Post-activity reflection questions are available here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Sharecropping-Game-Reflection-Questions-3460102
I recommend having students use an online dice roller or a random number table when the game calls for a dice roll.
