Crossword puzzle (with solution). This is a vocabulary quiz, designed to cement in students' minds the meanings of 29 key words useful in description of the plot.
Words used in the puzzle are blasphemy, bribe, convicted, corruption, crime, escape, guilty, harmonica, homosexual, hope, infirmary, innocent, institutionalized, library, money-laundering, murder, obtuse, parole, prison, rape, redeem, redemption, rehabilitate, sadism, scam, siren, suicide, tax-evasion, and warden.
This is a fun activity which students enjoy. Many don't even see this as work, although they are working on expanding their vocabulary and spelling skills. A useful add-on exercise is to ask students to write a new sentence for each word. This can be done with no restrictions, or you could ask them to write a sentence which shows their understanding of how each word is relevant to the plot. In this way, you are reinforcing their knowledge of the text.
