This PowerPoint teaches students about evidence-based writing, using inference skills, and constructing short responses based on textual evidence. I call it the "Sherlock Holmes Method of Writing." This includes a short video of a scene in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes that illustrates how Sherlock Holmes deduces information about people and how students should use this method to be good writers.
Included in this presentation are activities in which students infer information from musical lyrics, short commercials, and poetry.
This also contains an example of a short response based on the book The Outsiders.

Note: I usually pair this presentation with our reading of Ray Bradbury's There Will Come Soft Rains.
