The Silk Road Webquest and Video Analysis with Key- this is a 10 page document that contains a webquest and a completed teachers key for easy marking. It contains 26 questions based on a Crash Course World History video, the History.com website, and the Ancient History Online Encyclopedia.
Students will first be introduced to the concept of the Silk Road by watching a video on YouTube from the History Channel series "Mankind, A History of Us" which will explain what the Silk Road was and how it operated. The video will show students that the Silk Road wasn't just a single marked route, instead it will explain that it was a vast series of trading networks spanning three continents. After the video introduction, students will watch a Crash Course video which will go into greater detail about the Silk Road. The goods traded (besides silk), the groups involved, the economic activity which the trade routes encouraged, the spread of culture and ideas, and the spread of disease along the Silk Road (Black Death) are all examined. Included in this section is also a link to a short YouTube video which shows viewers how silk was produced prior to mechanization. Finally, students will read an online encyclopedia entry about the Silk Road. The reading will go into detail regarding the Chinese and their opening up to trade in 130 BCE, the other civilizations which contributed to the Silk Road, the Ottoman closing of the trade routes in 1453, and the subsequent emergence of the age of exploration after the Silk Road was no longer accessible to Europeans.
This webquest can be easily used as an introduction to the topic, a study guide, or a quick and easy sub plan.
