ELA Common Core Standards The Six Traits of Writing
This unit has everything you need, except the technology and the study copies to effectively review the six traits of writing with your middle and high school students. There are several files included in the Zipped folder.
Provide students with the blank 6 Traits study guide chart.
As they watch each of the videos, have them develop a preview for each trait, as they take down some brief notes relating to each trait.
Day 2: Ideas
(Use the Six Traits of Writing PowerPoint file (ideas section only).
I have some photographs that I purchased.
Day 3: Organization
(Use the Six Traits of Writing PowerPoint file (organization section only).
I use the first commercial to model the parts of organization
Day 4: Voice
(Use the Six Traits of Writing PowerPoint file (voice section only).
Day 5: Sentence Fluency
(Use the Six Traits of Writing PowerPoint file (sentence fluency section only).
Days 5 & 6: Word Choice
(Use the Six Traits of Writing PowerPoint file (word choice section only).
There is another PPT called “Rice Cakes or Salsa Words” that can be used if you choose to have students bring in the food items.
There is also an alternate assignment for those that are absent when the skits are composed/ developed.
There is also a sample skit provided.
Typically, I have students bring in rice cakes, salsa, and chips. I divide the class into three groups, so we get all of the items. This really drives home the idea of salsa words versus rice cake words.
Use the Salsa Words Commercial file for this activity.
Day 7: Review
The PowerPoint contains a link to a review game for Jeopardy that I created.
A test with answer key is also provided, as well as an answer sheet that simplified grading.
A completed study guide that can be copied and passed out to the students is also provided.
If you purchase and are satisfied, please leave positive feedback. If you are unhappy, please contact me so we can discuss why.
