After “re-introducing” your students to the metric system using the “Metric Olympics Lab”, why not give them a project that allows them to continue practicing those metric conversions? This project is just the thing! I thought of this project one day while looking at a timeline that ranked items in order of increasing time. I encourage students to be as creative as they want on their submitted sizelines. Many times students will include pictures, drawings, some will make their sizelines using software programs while others simply write theirs out-the differences between each sizeline is astounding! I have students put their sizeline on one side of a piece of paper and all of their mathematics on the back side that supports the order of objects on their sizeline. This way every student is responsible for the MATH and not just the correctly ordered items. For assessment, I include a “math grade” (where I check each calculation for accuracy) and an “order grade” (where I check the order of the objects on their sizeline). The very creative projects also become beautiful artwork that you can use to decorate your classroom!
