The Student Dictionary is a great way to help students learn, acquire, and use as many words as they can. The vocabulary resources will assist students in building their dictionary and engage them in a variety of ways to maximize their vocabulary’s expansion. Below is an outline of the resources included to help teach challenging vocabulary in and related to The Skin I'm In and build your students’ vocabulary knowledge.
Chapter-by-Chapter Vocabulary Pages: For each chapter, two challenging vocabulary words or related words have already been identified and listed on the chapter’s vocabulary page. For each word, students write its definition, identify the part of speech, write synonyms and antonyms, and fill in the blank for two sentences using the word in context. Students can complete these tasks using the condensed or expanded format. The condensed format is more tree-friendly with more words per-page. The expanded format has fewer words per-page but leaves space for students to create a semantic map and a logic diagram to aid their memory. Regardless of the format you use (both are included), each chapter has two vocab words – a total of 64 words for the novel.
Vocabulary Pages Answer Key: The answer key provides the definition, location of the word in The Skin I'm In (if applicable), part of speech, synonyms, and antonyms for all vocabulary words. The semantic map does not apply since students fill out the section based on individual interpretation.
Vocabulary Crossword Puzzles: Three crossword puzzles test students’ knowledge of the vocabulary words. The puzzle prompts include definitions, synonyms, antonyms, or fill-in-the-blank to challenge students to apply their knowledge of definitions in different formats. The first puzzle is based on chapters 1-10 vocabulary, the second puzzle is based on chapters 11-21, and the third puzzle is based on chapters 22-32. Puzzle answer keys are provided.
Vocabulary Quizzes: The first vocabulary quiz tests students’ knowledge on the words from chapters 1-10. The second quiz tests words from chapters 11-22, and the third quiz tests words from chapters 23-32. All quizzes are matching and students have to correctly identify the right definition, synonym, antonym, or correct usage in a sentence. An answer is key provided.
