The Small Adventure of Popeye and Elvis Novel Study

I am working my way through my classroom library creating novel studies like this for my book groups. I have used this novel study with my high readers in grade 3, but the book is at a Guided Reading Level S. The questions are built off the Reading Literature Key Ideas and Details Common Core State Standards.

Although my students are reading books at their level, and they have their nose in the book the whole time, I wondered, "How do I really know that they are reading?" Yes, I’ve taught them to analyze the characters' traits, look for tension, and to build ideas for the themes of the story. They are writing on post its, writing long from a post it, and writing reading responses, but how do I know they are doing high level thinking and analyzing if I haven’t read the book? I don’t have time to read all these books! I need to know what's going on in the chapters and be able to ask high quality questions.

This book guide is a guide to the book perhaps your students are reading individually, in partnerships, or in book clubs. Included are short chapter gists as well as a few questions per chapter you can ask the student as you pull up a chair for a quick 3 minute conference depending on where they are in the book. The questions include the answers. By using them you will know if the student is understanding the book, and also if they are using high level thinking as they read. You have to know what’s happening in the book, you have to know what questions to ask to lift the level of thinking, and this guide provides you that ability without ever having read the book!

Many of the chapters in this story are fairly short and I have combined them in the following way.

Chapter 1 pages 1-10
Chapters 2-3 pages 23-35
Chapters 4-5 pages 36-50
Chapters 9-11 pages 51-66
Chapters 12-13 pages 67-80
Chapters 14-16 pages 81-94
Chapters 17-18 pages 95-107
Chapters 19-21 pages 108-123
Chapters 22-23 pages 124-133
Chapters 24-26 pages 134-150
