Students review events from the Space Race of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States, and even a few extras, by putting together a 34 item timeline starting with the launch of the first ballistic missile and ending with the Curiosity rover landing on Mars. Students then classify the events according to a system detailed in the instructions. They complete one task for 10 items of their choice and another task for 4 other items. All instructions are provided in the handout. Arrows in the first two lines of the timeline show students the direction to fill out the pieces in. This could work for a sub! Answers are provided where appropriate.
Sample timeline items and questions include:
--Chuck Yeager breaks sound barrier
--Sputnik and dog, Laika, launched
--Valentina Tereshkova is first woman in space
--Soviets collect atmospheric data from Venus
--last 2 men walk on moon
--Apollo-Soyuz Test Project
--Hubble Space Telescope deployed by Discovery
--Identify and explain 2 of the biggest challenges involved in participating in the Space Race, and 2 of the biggest accomplishments.
--Create a one line slogan to sum up the nature of the Space Race.
