I teach Language Arts with the Harcourt Trophies Curriculum. One of the most “delicious” stories in this series is one called “Papa Tells Chita a Story.” It is a Historical Fiction story about a man, Papa, who served in the Spanish American War. His journey and urgent message he delivers to the colonel is told to his daughter Chita numerous times and each time it is told the story grows! I was interested in the history of this war as the author, Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard alludes to the war through her writing. I created this lesson to better help my students understand this little known war, the famous person involved, and the location of Cuba and Spain. This is a small cross-curricular lesson! I hope it helps your students understand the history behind the story a little bit better. Blessings to all.
