The eighth unit of "The Spirit of Texas" Texas History curriculum introduces students to Statehood and the Civil War. Topics include: Texas Joins the U.S., A New State and Citizens, the Mexican-American War, the Texas Rangers, Trouble Brewing Between the North and the South, Civil War, Battle for Galveston, the Battle of Sabine Pass, Battle Near Brownsville, the Red River Campaign, Life in Civil War Texas, the Civil War is Over, Reconstruction, New Rules for Statehood, and Texas after Reconstruction.
Students begin by reading a short passage (1-2 pages) from the "Daily Reading" text found at the beginning of the unit. Following the silent or oral reading, students will answer the passage comprehension questions, and proceed to the Activity Guide section.
The Activity Guide section offers a multitude of cross-curricular activities related to the topic of the passage read. Math, science, crafts, vocabulary (vocabulary is bold/italicized in the daily reading text), geography, copy work, writing prompts, and many more exercises are described and suggested, along with reproducible worksheets. Also included are recommended books, art to explore, related websites, music and songs to learn, places to visit, and a supply list.
