This is a Warm Up/Review Lesson using two first day covers-envelopes with commemorative stamp, postmark and artwork which will introduce students to the history and symbolism of the Statue of Liberty. Students will analyze the images found in the stamp and the artwork as well as the significance of the postmark, both the place and date. "Open the envelope" and read the poem, "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus and discuss why it was attached to the base of the statue. Conclude by discussing if the Statue of Liberty is as important today to immigrants as it was during the Gilded Age? This lesson fits into a unit lesson on the Gilded Age, or a thematic lesson on immigration.
