This activity is designed to be an active viewing assignment to accompany History Channel's Story of US, episode 4 - Division. It contains 40 questions, divided into segments according to the program, including post-viewing questions that address the overall themes. The questions are designed to encourage active viewing and are in order throughout the video. They are spaced enough to make sure students are still able to watch the video. This episode is currently available on YouTube, and is also available for purchase on various sites such as Amazon.
Topics in this episode include:
-The Erie Canal
-Cotton and Cotton Gin
-The Slave Trade and Debates
-John Brown's Raid and Abolition movements
I have found that having your students preview the questions before showing the video allows them to stay engaged without guessing about when/where they will find answers to the questions.
